How To Choose The Right Foundation

As we all know, foundation is the most important tool in your makeup as it creates a better canvas for the rest of your makeup. If you are a beginner, just follow these simple steps and you'll find the right foundation that suits you perfectly.

Step1- You need to understand your skin type.

Do you have dry skin, normal skin, combination skin or oily skin?

If you have dry skin, your face would feel dry, tight and sometimes flaky. The type of foundation that you should be going for are cream foundations and liquid foundations.

If you have normal skin, your complexion is usually even and the surface of your skin is never too dry or too oily. You can basically rock any type of foundation.

If you have combination skin, your T-zone which is your forehead, nose and chin, would be oily while the rest of your face is dry. You should go for an oil-free liquid foundation or an oil-free cream foundation.

If you have oily skin, your skin would feel greasy and look shiny. You might also be suffering from blemishes or even acne. You should go for a pressed powder foundation or an oil-free liquid foundation.

Step 2- Choosing the right type of finish

For dry skin, go for a dewy finish
If you have normal skin, you can go with a dewy or a matte finish
If you combination or oily skin, look for foundations that has a matte finish.

Step 3- Understanding the right undertones

Foundations often comes in 3 undertones, cool, neutral and warm. So, how do you determine your undertone?

Take a look at your veins. If they are blue in colour, you have a cool undertone. You can also tell if you are cool if silver jewelries look great on you.

If your veins are green, you're warm. Gold jewelries also look the best on you.

If you have a neutral undertone, your veins are basically turquoise in colour and you look great with both silver and gold jewelries.

Step 4- Choosing the right shade

People always say that you should match your foundation to your chest but this isn't the best idea if your face and chest are 2 completely different shade. If your chest is way lighter than your face and if you go with the shade of your chest, your face would look ghostly and ashy. So always match your foundation to your jaw.

Do a couple of swatches along your jaw and ask a friend to see which shade matches you the most. There are times where you might not be able to find the perfect shade. In that case, you should buy 2 foundations, one that is lighter than your skin tone and one that is darker. Now you're able to mix and match! Remember, NEVER use a foundation that is way lighter or darker than your skin tone to change the colour of your skin. Foundation isn't meant to do so.

Good luck finding your foundation :)
